Spatial Bodies: Vulnerable Inclusiveness within Gyms and Fitness Venues in Sweden

Today, gyms and fitness venues set out, on a superficial level at least, to cater the individual, no matter what their gender are therefore often seen as inclusive spaces for physical activity its concomitant health benefits. However, previous research has shown that such, well certain areas within gyms, perceived specifically masculine spaces, referring contextually contingent hegemonic masculinity, thereby deterring those who do not align with this image, especially women, but also men. Even when these dividing lines crossed, gendered movement schema remains, because there different social expectations of what, how, where men women should exercise. As we will see in paper, schemas produced reproduced through discursive spatial linkages gym culture. In addition investigating ways norms implicated very architecture general, one gym, particular, is used an example since it written into statutes work norm-critical way, providing case study shows attempt disrupt inhibiting discourse and, thereby, possibly creating more space.
